Welcome to Fall in the Valley!

Welcome, old friends and new, to the Fall/Winter 2011 issue of Shenandoah Valley & Beyond! As we turn the last page of summer and head back to school, fall schedules, new teams, Holiday preparations, we should always make an effort to keep one eye on the good life – never straying too far from your allies in the fight against autopilot ruts and brain drain – the travel journals. Weekends are still prime times for a quick get-away to a local resort – there are a few right near you! A fine dining experience or a romantic escape will be just enough to keep the winter blahs at bay. Also, continue to pay close attention to physical fitness. A golfing weekend in the Virginias or a hike on the Appalachian Trail provides a refreshing change from the gym routine!

Our Detective Gnomes are relentless in their quest to bring you the best soul-restoring and yummiest places to spend a couple of days or a few stolen hours – refreshing the body, mind and spirit.

Here’s to Happiest Holidays 2011, and celebrating well in the Valley!

Holiday Feature: THE POLAR EXPRESS!

In Elkins, the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad offers a new winter train attraction for 2011 — THE POLAR EXPRESS ! Partnering with Rail Events, Inc. (through Warner Brothers Consumer Products, Inc.), the DGV Railroad brings to the Elkins area the officially licensed national train ride event this coming holiday season!
THE POLAR EXPRESS train rides are based on the holiday feature film from Warner Bros. and the beloved children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg, about a doubting young boy who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. Set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack, pajama-clad passengers relive the magic of the story as this nighttime train whisks families away for an unforgettable ride to the North Pole. During the journey, the Conductor will punch tickets and dancing Chefs serve hot chocolate, followed by a reading of Van Allsburg’s classic. At the North Pole (nearby Belington, WV), Santa boards the train, greets the children and offers a gift of those who truly believe — a silver sleigh bell. READ MORE
